Sunday 2nd XI V South Nutfield 2008

Three fine performances from the team's younger members were the only silver lining to the Sunday 2s' disappointing defeat away to this week. Justin Watson led the way with excellent display of quick bowling to take 5 wickets on his debut for the team; Andrew Walters also on debut made a quick and valuable 23 runs with the bat; while old hand Nathan Heal produced a handy spell of medium pace to take 2 key wickets, and could have had more.

After finally winning a toss at the fourth attempt this season, skipper James Parmenter inserted the home team on a slow but true wicket. A strong batting line-up appeared intent on playing in Twenty20 style, but a fine opening spell from Justin Watson, who finished with impressive figures of 5 for 19 from 6.2 overs, reduced them to 45 for 5 after 10 overs.

But the opening bat continued to play aggressively, and it was only a typically miserly spell from the old miser himself Bob Tyrell (2 for 36 from his 12 overs) which kept a lid on things. Nathan Heal (2 for 20) then came on to show the senior bowlers how things are done, by removing the danger man for 99.

It was a good performance all-round to bowl out a strong team for 162 on a decent wicket. It could have been an even lower score if some of the half-dozen dropped catches had been held, but I think it would be unfair of us to start naming names, when we could be discussing the contribution of the skipper's bowling spell to the score. His entertaining three overs went for 40 runs, and led to much frantic searching for spare cricket balls, after several were lost in the distance over the railway line.

After tea, Len Heal (16) and Dave Thomas (44) put on a solid if unspectacular 40 for the first wicket. Wickets then started to fall, but the run chase was set up nicely when CCWCC progressed to 101 for 3, requiring 5 an over from the last 12 overs. But unfortunately, once DT fell, the batting self-destructed under the pressure of some not especially challenging slow bowling on a slow wicket. Andrew Walters was the only bright light, making a brisk 23 to keep the score moving. There was a regular procession from the square to the pavilion, as the last 5 wickets fell for 3 runs. CCWCC were dismissed for 125, to taste only their third defeat of the season, by 37 runs.

The crowd is on the edge of their seats.....

Solid from the skipper.

Just like Vaughan the captaincy starts to take its toil.

Brian hits out!

Andrew try's his best with a very quick twenty

(note the ball's position and silly mid on's reaction)

Nathan on the attack

Stevie D has a go, but he can't make up for the lack of runs for an out of form middle order
